POWER RANGERS (2017) STORY SYNOPSIS

​Five ordinary teens must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove - and the world - is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it's too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

“Go, Go Power Rangers!” If that’s what you were hoping to hear to bring those childhood memories flooding back, then you won’t be disappointed by Dean Israelite’s Power Rangers feature film adaptation from good old Haim Saban; the “true believer” who has milked the proverbial life out of the colour chart in order to reinvent this newest cadre of intergalactic “Mighty Morphin” super heroes. The movie takes a little while to find its feet, but once it eschews the pretense of a John Hughes 1980s teen melodrama, the story gets down to business and cracks along at a pace that will provide some level of satisfaction for fans and pumps the young adult crowd with a dose of barely M-rated action that will keep them entertained until the next YouTube sensation hits the web (about fourteen seconds after the film’s credits have faded)!

The story is pretty stock ‘Origin’ stuff. A group of out-of-bounds high school kids stumble across five coloured coins (Red,Blue,Pink,Yellow & Black), discover their from an ancient alien species and are drawn into an intergalactic feud to save their hometown (and Earth) in the process. If anyone is shocked by this plot then you’ve been off-the-grid for too long. The TV Power Rangers cut their teeth on this plot; each episode an ever-so-slight variation on the same daring-do adventure week-after-week. Where Dean Israelite’s new film wins is in the ability of the movie’s young ensemble of actors to rise above the story’s premise and deliver their characters with enthusiasm and conviction. Much like their characters, there comes a point in the movie where Darce Montgomery (Red Ranger, Jason), Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger, Kimberly), R.J. Cyler (Blue Ranger, Billy), Becky G. (Yellow Ranger, Trini) and Ludi Lin (Black Ranger, Zack) stop acting as individuals and start bouncing off each other as a group; creating a pleasantly surprising positive dynamic that propels the movie through its second half.

In addition to the cast of young Power Rangers, it’s also fun to see Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks truly slumming it. Both are fine performers, but it’s clear that neither of them are in Power Rangers for anything other than the money. Banks obviously had a whale of time as ‘Bad Girl’ Rita Repulsa, but she keeps things in check enough to ensure that she nothing more than just a mild gnaw on the scenery and not a full-blown chew and spit. Likewise, Cranston. He’s not quite phoning it in as the digitally-imprisoned good guy Zorn, but viewers aren’t being treated to vintage, Emmy-winning Cranston either. Looking a lot like a monochromatic, pixelated version of Max Headroom, Cranston sticks to the one note throughout the film, utilising myriad variations of motivational methods to get the teen team concentrating on the job at hand. The only other performance of note is Bill Hader lending his vocal talents to Alpha 5, Zorn’s robot assistant. The less said about Alpha 5 the better...

Power Rangers is a solid piece of entertainment. It’s definitely pitched at a younger crowd and it’s important to keep this in mind, approach it with a glass-half-full philosophy and accept it as a genuine effort by the producers to deliver a work of escapist entertainment with broad family appeal. Israelite provides some continuity from his previous, thematically similar film Project Almanac; recruiting the likes of Cinematographer Matthew J. Lloyd and Film Editor Martin Bernfeld into these key production posts to help him deliver a movie with a significantly larger budget than his $5 million 2015 feature. A large percentage of aforementioned “larger budget” has been spent on the film’s effects, but it’s one element that doesn’t measure up to expectations. Despite my own loathing for overblown CGI spectacle, Power Rangers is a movie that could have done with more work in this department. Only at the film’s very end are viewers treated to the sort of spectacle that should have been incorporated into more set-pieces throughout the movie for it to well and truly rock audiences out of their seats and establish greater anticipation for the sequels that appear set to follow!
