​Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. The most ambitious experiment in cinema history comes to a hugely satisfying conclusion in AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

So many people could take credit for the success of both AVENGERS: ENDGAME and the preceding twenty-one films that laid the foundation for this culminating effort, but chief among them is Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.

Feige’s ambition to translate a multi-edition comic book narrative into a cinematic universe (the MCU, as it has come to be known) was not original but few could have imagined back in 2006, when Marvel reacquired the film rights to IRON MAN (2008), thirteen years later the size and scope of what he has achieved...

A multi-billion dollar movie studio operating under the patronage of one of the world’s biggest entertainment companies….

A Studio that has never experienced Box Office failure...

And, in more recent times, critical recognition to match the commercial success. (A nomination for BLACK PANTHER (2018) in the Best Picture category at the 91st Academy Awards.)

This is the legacy that Feige has created for Marvel Studios and AVENGERS: ENDGAME marks not just the conclusion of one era but the start of an entirely new base from which to launch a raft of different films (and other entertainment mediums), introducing an even wider array of Marvel characters to audiences right around the planet.

(It’s not lost on anyone who follows either Marvel Studios or The Walt Disney Company that the now-completed acquisition of Rupert Murdoch’s 20th Century Fox includes the return of movie rights for Marvel creations that include The X-Men, Wolverine, Deadpool, The Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, Galactus and Cable; to name a few.)

The impact of the MCU has also pushed other studios to think about how they develop their own cinematic franchises.

The most direct comparison is with the DC movies, primarily featuring Superman and Batman. Warner Bros, DC’s owners, have tried a number of times to emulate the Marvel multi-movie formula, but have failed to nail the concept nearly as successfully as Feige and his Marvel team. More recent efforts such as WONDER WOMAN (2017), AQUAMAN (2018) and SHAZAM (2019) have dialled-down DC’s efforts to create a cinematic universe that “competes” with Marvel.

The most impressive replication of the Marvel template has been THE CONJURING Supernatural Horror movie franchise. $1.6 billion in worldwide box office receipts from six films that have cumulative production costs of $112 million is an impressive effort and demonstrate, when thought properly through, the MCU formula works!

However, Kevin Feige is not the sole architect of MCU success.

He’s had a little help along the way…

During the release, and after the Box Office success, of IRON MAN (2008), Robert Downey Jr. was a one-man PR machine for the fledgling Marvel Studios, spruiking the character of Tony Stark A.K.A Iron Man, his movie and his new employers at every opportunity.

After a period in the wilderness (and a stint in jail), Downey Jr. had been given a second chance to be the Movie Star everyone always knew he could be.

The “Mayor of Marvel” became the public face to help build the Studios profile and promote the plans Feige had for a series of interconnected movies that would prepare audiences for the arrival of THE AVENGERS (2012). His support during the initial MCU roll-out was invaluable.

No film is worth its weight unless it’s well scripted…

Robert Downey Jr. is a great salesman, but, if the stories had been crap, the success may not have come in such a consistent manner.

There have been many talented writers work on the twenty-two Marvel Studios films, but Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have become the key scribes, receiving credit for six adventures, including CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (2011), THOR: THE DARK WORLD (2013), CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014), CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2016) and the last two Avengers films.

AVENGERS: ENDGAME is littered with references to all of those films, but their screenplay goes further than just a short moment here and there.

Markus and McFeely successfully weave together a compelling narrative that takes the story to some unexpected places both physically and emotionally. Their knowledge of the Marvel canon is to be expected, but their work on this new film extends beyond comic book characters and stories, delivering a story that exists in a reality that acknowledges a film such as ENDGAME can’t exist in a bubble.

There’s real drama.

There’s a stack of humour.

There’s genuine loss.

A screenplay is one thing. Finding people to translate what’s on the page into film is an entirely different thing. What makes the task even more momentous is the fact that AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (2018) and ENDGAME were filmed back-to-back…

Enter the Russos…

Anthony and Joe Russo, much like Markus and McFeely, have become the “Go To” directing duo for Marvel.

Back in 2014, the siblings scored a major hit with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, a film that helped to break the franchise out of its reliance upon comic book inspired scenarios to deliver audience satisfaction.

WINTER SOLDIER was a genuine political thriller and the presence of Robert Redford, as Secretary Alexander Pierce, provided a spiritual link to great cinematic conspiracy fare such as THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (1975) and ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN (1976); two Redford films that served as inspiration for Captain America’s second outing.

The Russo Brothers contribution to the manner in which ENDGAME successfully concludes “The Avengers” story arc is immense and their determination to finish it properly should not go unacknowledged.

Many things point to their desire to make sure the 2012 Avengers team receive a fitting farewell, but most obvious is the film’s 181 minute running time.

Imagine the discussion with Feige, Disney films chief Alan Horn and Disney boss Bob Iger…

“Gentleman, we’ve finished our cut of ENDGAME and we’re pleased to say that it runs less than four hours…”

In order to do justice to the material, the Russos pay attention to the detail, give all their performers the right amount of time to deliver their lines and allow the key characters to drive the emotion, not just the action.

That’s what’s so good about AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

It’s not just a huge CGI-driven visual effects blockbuster devoid of subtlety or soul.

Feige, Markus, McFeely and the Russos have delivered something more…

Lasting peace always involves loss on all sides.

Josh Brolin’s Thanos believes that wiping out half of all existence in the Universe is the answer. Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, as Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, do not.

The conundrum of ENDGAME is how to walk back from the devastation of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (2018) and make the audience feel as though the last twenty-one films have been worth over a decade of movie-going investment.

The answer is not simple and viewers will need to have a decent understanding of their Marvel movies to enjoy the full benefit of what AVENGERS: ENDGAME has to offer.

Has it been worth the last eleven years?

For Marvel fans, the answer should be a resounding “Yes”.

For everyone else?

Sit back and enjoy the ride.

A film with the ambition of ENDGAME only comes along every so often, so take the opportunity to soak up everything it has offer.
