​Frank Martin is living a less perilous lifestyle, or so he thinks, transporting classified packages for questionable people. Things get complicated when femme fatale Anna and her three accomplices orchestrate a bank heist and the kidnapping of Frank's father. It's all part of a grand plan to take down the human trafficker who victimized her years earlier. Now a pawn in her vengeful scheme, the former special-operations mercenary must use his covert skills to play Anna's dangerous game.

THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED attempts to reboot a franchise that started strong with the original Jason Statham film in the early 2000s but fell away with successive sequels, the last of which graced cinema screens back in 2008. In this latest version, viewers are introduced to Frank Martin (Ed Skrein); the name of the character played by Jason Statham in the original trilogy of films. Given the relative lack of distance between THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED and the the Statham movies (7 years), it's fair to assume that "Frank Martin" must be some kind of code name that all Transporters use it protect their protagonist’s identities!

There's some justification for Skrein's character to want to protect his real name, as the wanton level of destruction he engages in with his souped-up Audi A8 is more than enough for him to be disqualified from driving anywhere in the world forever! Martin's troubles start when he is contracted to help the beautiful Anna (Loan Chabanol) in her efforts to escape her Russian Mafia overlords. At first, Frank treats it as just another job, done by his rules (or else he walks away from the job.) Helping Anna and her friends pull a heist  on an exclusive bank is just the beginning of his misadventures with a quartet of beauties making their former employees pay for their mistreatment, but incurring their collective Eastern European wrath at the same time.

The situation takes a turn for the personal when Frank discovers that his father (Ray Stevenson), who goes by the name “Frank Martin Snr.”, has been kidnapped by Anna and given a toxic drug that will need an antidote to stop Martin-the-elder from passing into the nether-realm. With no choice but to agree, Frank transports Anna's team to a nightclub, where the patrons are gassed, Anna and her girls commit a high-tech cyber-crime and Frank gets in one almighty fight with the nightclub security team on their dinner break. While it may sound like a by-the-numbers action flick, THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED is a lot of fun (in a testosterone-fuelled, action flick kind of way).

It's not really the destination that makes REFUELED enjoyable, it's the increasingly crazy car stunts, combined  with a bit of macho coolness on leading man Skrein's part, throughout the journey that lifts the film into above average stakes. The addition of the experienced Stevenson as Martin Snr. helps lighten the tone of the film, with some cheeky moments between him and Anna's trio of beautiful cohorts. Chabanol acquits herself well as Anna, but Russian bad guys are one-note villains all-round, led by Serbian actor Radivoje Bukvic.

Camille Delamarre, who has been one of Producer Luc Besson’s Go-To Directors for this type of film in the last few years (see TAKEN 2, TRANSPORTER 3 & COLOMBIANA), stages the action well and captures the rough stuff up close and personal with his BRICK MANSIONS Cinematographer Christophe Collette. Delamarre tries hard to make the quieter moments something of substance, but the plot-driven script by Luc Besson and writing team Adam Cooper & Bill Collage seldom takes a breath as it hurtles toward its inevitable over-the-top, audacious conclusion. If it’s fast cars, hand-to-hand combat, Russian mobsters, Cat and Mouse between an Audi and a 737 jetplane and high-speed jet ski action. then THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED is the perfect tonic for any action film withdrawals you may be suffering!
