MOVIE REVIEWS - 1970
After a promising end to the 1960s, with the release of films such as FANTASTIC VOYAGE (1966), FARENEHIT 451 (1966), PLANET OF THE APES (1968) and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968), 1970 could be best described as the low-ebb of the decade...
The year had few notable genre releases, the exception being the excellent COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, along with Dario Argento's THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE. Audiences were treated to a PLANET OF THE APES sequel, but the limited presence of Charlton Heston robbed the film of any real chance to explore the implications of the original film's final, shocking moments with any great depth. 1970 was also notable for the release of David Cronenberg's second feature film CRIMES OF THE FUTURE at the Adelaide Film Festival in Australia. At a scant 63 minutes, the film explores the controversial subject of paedophilia. |
