MOVIE REVIEWS - 1972
1972 had two genre masterpieces...
Francis Ford Coppola's THE GODFATHER redefined modern cinema, not just in terms of the Crime Drama genre, but a more realistic approach to the way drama was shot and portrayed in feature films. The film is an epic tale, but the character interactions are intimate, allowing the viewer to feel as though they're a forst hand witness to the conversation taking place before them. THE GODFATHER was both a Box Office and critical hit, reviving the flagging career of Marlon Brando and establishing the film career of Al Pacino. Andrei Tarkovsky's SOLARIS is on par with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY in terms of ambition, adapating Stanislaw Lem's novel into one of the most thought-provoking, intelelctually challenging Science Fiction films ever made. Like THE GODFATHER, SOLARIS transcends its genre. Tarkovsky is not so much interested with the visual trappngs of the genre as he is in using the alien setting to tell a very human story. SOALRIS is - quite simply - a cinematic masterpiece. |
