GET OUT (2017) STORY SYNOPSIS

​Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

GET OUT is a film that successfully services different needs for different viewers. For those just wanting a well-crafted mystery thriller, writer & director Jordan Peele delivers 104 minutes of ever-increasing tension, as Daniel Kaluuya’s Chris and Allison Williams’ Rose work to figure out the strange happenings at her parents family estate. For viewers who are looking for more of an intellectual bent from their movies, GET OUT is a well thought-through critique about the current state of the American people, their psyche and, especially, the highly-emotive topic of race relations between whites and blacks. When viewed this way, GET OUT has almost a documentary-like quality, holding a mirror to America and providing some disturbing reflections.

Despite the seriousness of the themes it addresses, GET OUT still manages to maintain a sense of humour about itself and the subject matter it’s tackling, a by-product of Peele’s own background as writer for television shows such as Mad TV and his own Key & Peele. GET OUT, however, is in a different league to anything Peel has been associated with to this point and marks the coming-of-age of Peele as a filmmaker.

At the centre of Get Out is Kaluuya’s Chris Washington, a young black man who has his share of demons, but has come to accept the world he lives in. Chris is a little nervous about an impending trip with Williams’ Rose Armitage, who thinks it’s about time her new boyfriend met her parents. Chris becomes sceptical of the trip when Rose admits she hasn’t told her parents that he’s black. Chris has seen enough of the world to know that his skin colour is problematic in the context of dating a white girl from a well-to-do upstate family. His mood isn’t brightened by his friend Rod, in a fantastic turn by Comedian LilRel Howery, who becomes something of a meta-cypher throughout the film, calling out the story’s contrivances but twisting them in such a fashion that the viewer can’t help but laugh along with the cliches he’s decrying. Despite Rod’s seemingly over-the-top warnings, Chris and Rose head for her parents family estate, but not without some adventure along the way.

Peele makes an effort to disorientate both Chris and the viewer even before the young couple of have arrived at Rose’s parents home. A strange encounter with local law enforcement after a car accident gets Chris thinking that he has made the wrong decision and the viewer musing that he’s probably right.

The young man’s unease grows upon meeting Rose’s parents, Dean and Missy, played by Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener. Dean is cringe-worthy in his effort to display how in tune with black people he is, while Missy is a silent, lurking present, always catching Chris at the worst possible moment. The weirdness is compounded by the presence of two black staff members at the estate, both of whom seem to be in some kind of dazed, alternate reality; only capable of performing the most menial of chores and looking very much like a 21st century version of American slavery.

It’s at this point, as GET OUT moves into its Second Act, that Peele starts to manipulate the viewer as Chris becomes increasingly uncomfortable with every new person he meets at the Armitages. Caleb Landry Jones, as Rose’s brother Jeremy, and Stephen Root, as Jim Hudson, both score highly with impressive supporting roles and, in their own unique way, provide a real sense of menace toward Chris and what he represents to them.

GET OUT is one of the best movies to come out in 2017.

​The hype about coming out of various Film Festivals may had been a tad exuberant, but it’s easy to see how American critics and viewers have come to regard this film so highly. It’s a story about how much unease America has with itself at this very moment in history. There may not be the same cultural imperative in other countries as there is in the United States, but there’s no argument Jordan Peele has delivered a great film that deserves to be noticed, both critically and commercially. The writing is clever, the acting is first-class and, despite the underlying menace that plays throughout the film, there’s a real sense of hope and, for the more optimistic viewer, it’s that to which the film’s title refers.
