​Ryan Fleege (Chris J. Murray), his wife Emily (Brit Shaw) and their 7-year-old daughter Leila (Ivy George) are preparing for Christmas in their new home. After finding an old and mysterious camcorder, Ryan quickly learns that it can record strange apparitions that are invisible to the naked eye. When young Leila starts talking to an imaginary friend and displaying strange behavior, the couple soon find themselves in a terrifying battle with a supernatural force.

The PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise established itself through its use of the “Found Footage” filming technique and has now served up six movies that have become progressively more self-referential and, in the process, confusing to viewers.

The latest entry - THE GHOST DIMENSION- brings back memories of that Eddie Murphy routine from the 1983 comedy album DELIRIOUS when he’s talking about the original POLTERGEIST movie. At one point he asks the audience, “Why didn’t they just get the fuck out of the house?” THE GHOST DIMENSION tries to instill some internal logic into all of its silliness by answering that question, but viewers (and possibly fans) will come to the conclusion that this entry is a new low-point for the series and it’s time to put the video cameras down.

It’s surprising to find so many people were willing to put their names to this film; especially in the story department. Between the story idea and the screenplay, no less than five people are credited for contributing to THE GHOST DIMENSION. It would certainly seem as though the movie was written by committee, as the pastiche of ideas presented in this film see it borrow not just from its own franchise, but other films such as the aforementioned POLTERGEIST series, pretty much every Supernatural thriller that ever featured a Priest and even echoes Blumhouse Productions micro-budget feature THE GALLOWS from earlier in 2015.

Director Gregory Plotkin, who has been the series long-standing Editor, somehow managed to score the Director’s Chair for THE GHOST DIMENSION, but his familiarity with its mythology doesn’t help him bring any more creativity or innovation to proceedings. (In all fairness, the guy had only directed a short film before being given the reins to this, so it’s not hard to see why it’s lacking in some key areas.)

The people who should be pitied most in THE GHOST DIMENSION are the actors. The only credible performance in the whole film is Olivia Taylor Dudley. Her character is somehow related to the family that live in the house, but it’s very clear that she was cast in this film because she is pretty and she’s a half-decent actor. (Check out THE VATICAN TAPES with Michael Pena on digital download if you see this movie and you’re inclined to see more of Dudley’s work.) Besides her, if any of the other performers in this film have genuine talent it’s been left on the cutting-room floor.

Chris J. Murray (as Ryan), Brit Shaw (as Emily) and Dan Gill (as Mike) all try to make something of their characters but with material as badly written as THE GHOST DIMENSION, none of them deliver anything revealing any real talent.. For the most part, this trio just look stupid as their lack of common sense and unequivocal thoughtlessness becomes a point of frustration for the viewer. (In some scenes it actually looks as they’ve forgotten they’re paid professionals and just go with whatever works best for them. This just serves to reinforce Plotkin’s lack of directing experience, as he seems incapable of reigning the actors’ performances in.)

The travesty of THE GHOST DIMENSION, and many others like it (mainly from Blumhouse Productions), is that so little is invested in the production values of this film that it doesn’t need a lot of people to go and see it to make money at the box office. This is not a bad thing in the short-term, as success breeds success, but, at some point, quality has to be addressed. If not in production values, then, at the very least, in creating stories that are thoughtful, provocative and help to legitimize supernatural thrillers and horror movies as genuine artistic channels...

The horror genre needs a more high-minded purpose.

The only purpose THE GHOST DIMENSION serves is that of exploitation. Within its story, it exploits children and portrays them as easy prey and, by way of its distribution for public viewing, the film exploits movie-goers who spend upward of $20 for an adult ticket to see a film that is questionable in terms of its quality as theatrical release.

There’s a reason why THE GHOST DIMENSION will be on digital download well before Christmas 2015 and it’s not because it will be proclaimed as “genius” and the masses will demand it be made available or else! No, it’ll be done because it’s a poor excuse for a feature film and that judgement will stand irrespective of whatever dimension this movie exists in!
