Logan, the second collaboration between “The Wolverine”, X-Men franchise stalwart Hugh Jackman, and unabashed Johnny Cash fan James Mangold, who sometimes writes and directs feature films, is the most uncompromising comic character-inspired movie ever released. It’s really that simple. Casual moviegoers will, without doubt, be surprised and, perhaps, even dismayed by what unfolds during Logan’s 137 minute running time, so it’s only fair that “viewer be warned”. The Adamantium claws are not just there for decoration. Is it the perfect comic book movie? The answer is no. Is it worth the price of admission? Absolutely. Logan is driven by Jackman’s performance and, unlike the X-Men movies, he’s not required to share screen time with a multitude of characters and visual effects to make Logan compelling viewing. It’s a case of story and performance winning out over style and excess!

Writer and Director James Mangold keeps Logan very, very grounded. Right from the opening scenes, where Logan is confronted by carjackers trying to knock the mag wheels off the limousine he now drives for a living, the viewer quickly comes to understand that the Wolverine is in a very different place to the last time we saw him in the most up-to-date version of the ever-evolving X-Men timeline (which was at the end end of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past). Times have changed and not for the better. X-Men fans will be shocked at what both Logan and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier have become in the intervening years; a booze-addled drug addict and a ticking time bomb of a man whose degenerative brain condition has the power to kill everyone around him! Mangold and his fellow screenwriters, Michael Green and Scott Frank, strip both once great heroes of the control over the one thing that made them different, their mutant power and Logan is all the better for it.

The film’s story is very loosely based on the Mark Millar Marvel story Old Man Logan, but, with the exception of a few select elements, the movie should be regarded as yet another alternative history of the X-Men. Mangold leaves the question as to whether or not the viewer is in the Bryan Singer X-Men universe somewhat ambiguous. The wriggle-room provided by this ensures there is enough room for Logan’s array of characters to make their mark upon the audience. While it’s always of pleasure to see Patrick Stewart in any role, the surprise is the strength of the supporting cast. Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce shines in the film’s First Act, but becomes lost in the plot machinations of the film’s finale. Playing against type, Stephen Merchant as Caliban is a revelation. He brings his unique comic timing to a role that could have fallen flat in another performer’s hands and his ghastly pale visage provides a striking paradox to the Mexican desertscape. Without doubt, Logan’s star turn comes from young Dafne Keen as Laura, a young Mexican girl who is brought to Logan by a woman who is desperate to save the girl from Richard E. Grant’s Dr. Zander Rice. Keen plays her character mute for much of the film, but the physicality of her performance (albeit with some CGI enhancements) and the power of her raw emotions dispel any thought that a child this young shouldn’t be the centre of an MA 15+ rated feature film.

Like Deadpool, Logan’s MA 15+ rating means that the kids on the other side of the screen aren’t getting through the door to see the film in multiplexes. It’s a calculated gamble by 20th Century Fox because, unlike the Merc with the Mouth’s $50 million production budget, Logan boasts a price tag of around $120 million. What it means is that both Wolverine and X-Men fans will need to come out in force at the Box Office around the globe to ensure the film’s financial success. Fortunately, the chief protagonists in this endeavour, messrs Mangold and Jackman have delivered a film with genuine emotion, a compelling story, moments of wonderful humour and a finale that will have X-men comic book fans talking for a very long time. Like the lyrics in the song say, all that’s left now is for the people to “Come and see”.
