THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS (2017) STORY SYNOPSIS

​With Dom and Letty married, Brian and Mia retired and the rest of the crew exonerated, the globe-trotting team has found some semblance of a normal life. They soon face an unexpected challenge when a mysterious woman named Cipher forces Dom to betray them all. Now, they must unite to bring home the man who made them a family and stop Cipher from unleashing chaos.

In no way shape or form will there be any effort to intellectualize this review… If you think that the eighth outing in this enduring Action franchise was going to mess with the formula in any way shape or form, then you need to go and catch Speed Racer 2; coming to a cinema near you no time soon! What viewers can expect is huge action set-pieces, a host of talented actors having a whale of time and Vin Diesel - yet again - prattling on about the importance of family. What else The Fate of the Furious proves is that the franchise is bigger than one actor; as ongoing series scribe Chris Morgan proves, once again writing around the absence of series stalwart Paul Walker, who died tragically in a car accident during, but unrelated to, the production of the last film. Without the weight of tragedy and sentiment to contend with, The Fate of the Furious gets to work on rebooting the franchise and moving it well and truly into the extravagant territory inhabited by the Pierce Brosnan era of James Bond movies.

Straight Outta Compton Director F. Gary Gray proves a worthy successor to Justin Lin and James Wan in the big chair, delving into his bag of tricks and pulling out his Italian Job 2003 remake playbook and using it as a launching pad for an outrageous array of vehicle stunts that will keep Fast & Furious true believers happily contented. For those more interested in on-camera talent, there’s no shortage on that front either. Beside Vin Diesel as stone-faced frontman Dom Toretto, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel and Kurt Russell all jump back into their respective roles from Fast 7. Dom’s crew are joined by Jason Statham, who reprises his role as Deckard Shaw, along with a few other surprise appearances that are better left unspoiled. To test Dom and his crew, the film’s Producers have cast A-lister Charlize Theron as Cipher, an omnipotent cyber-criminal who proves to be the most challenging antagonist the series has so far seen.

The story, such as it is, plays like a dust-off of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond swansong Die Another Day that’s been hooked up to some Soviet-era performance enhancing “diet pills” and let loose with $200 million of somebody else’s money. The story bounces between Havana, Berlin, Los Angeles, New York and some out-of-the-way Russian submarine base that serves as the setting for the film’s finale. This time around, instead of jumping high performance vehicles between the skyscrapers of Abu Dhabi, the team battle it out on the ice against a fully-armed Russian nuclear submarine like some sort of crazed Disney On Ice spectacular! When it’s all done and dusted, the main question that viewers will be asking is “How do our heroes get out of Russia without serving time in a Siberian prison?” Apart from that, it’s best not to question the logic of anything that happens throughout The Fate of the Furious as it may prompt some level of plot analysis that will not survive the rigours of inspection!

With at least two more films slated for production, there’s no denying the appeal of the Fast franchise. Behind the scenes, tensions boiled over at the end of the new film’s shoot with Dwayne Johnson taking a shot at Vin Diesel’s professionalism. With the series becoming more Action-oriented than ever, the presence of ‘The Rock’ should be a no brainer and the chemistry between Johnson and the supporting crew gels better than when they’re solely with Diesel. Even Michelle Rodriguez as Diesel’s on-screen wife Letty looks like she’d rather be anywhere else than within a kilometre radius of the series star. Despite the impression that the Fast series belongs to Diesel, not so long ago, it would have been hard to imagine this series without Paul Walker. Like they have with the Jurassic Park franchise, Universal Studios know that the brand is bigger than any one character of the franchise and, if they need to, are happy to reboot from a blank page. With actors like Johnson, a resurgent Kurt Russell, the always bankable Statham as well as a preparedness to draft A-listers like Charlize Theron for a single outing, perhaps it’s not quite time to right the Fast franchise off as an old jalopy just yet!
