​Humans are at war with the Transformers, and Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving the future lies buried in the secrets of the past and the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Michael Bay has stated this will be his last Transformers movie. For many, who seem to take it as a personal challenge to bring the hate to Bay, this will come as welcome news. For fans of the Transformers franchise (and there are many of those as there are haters), the loss of its driving creative force will lead to a nervous wait as Paramount searches for a new “General” to gather the troops for Transformers 6 and 7. The good news for Transformers fans is that The Last Knight continues the same high action, “take no prisoners” approach that has become a hallmark of Bay’s contribution to the franchise since the first film crashed its way onto cinema screens back in 2007!

The plot of The Last Knight is secondary to the ‘Action’, but screenwriters Art Marcum, Ken Nolan & Matt Holloway at least make an effort to ground the film’s rather weighty 149 minute running time in a story context - Arthurian Legend - that provides some sense to what’s going on; something that hasn’t been a strong point for any of the previous movies in this franchise. The connection to a period in Earth’s past provides the franchise with an opportunity for a soft reboot, paving the way for the next two movies. The return of Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yaeger also helps ground the film around an actor who has the presence to play the story material with a lighter touch than most. Wahlberg isn’t taking the end of the world too seriously, but he’s not mocking it either. His concerns show through in his emphasis on keeping those around him safe from the carnage unfolding around him. The addition of Laura Haddock’s Vivian Wembley provides Wahlberg a genuine foil to bounce off and their banter back and forth throughout The Last Knight adds some melodramatic spice that is somewhat at odds with the film’s target market, but will give accompanying parents & guardians the chance for a wry grin or two in between the twist and crunch of the Autobots and the Decepticons!

Where the Transformers movies excel, and The Last Knight is no exception, is in the execution of both visual and physical effects. Say what you will about Michael Bay’s style, the director is not shy in attempting to stage on-set effects, such as explosions, in the most realistic manner as possible. This is a technique that has been emulated by the Star Wars franchise recently, with both J.J. Abrams and Gareth Edwards staging battles up close, creating a sense that the viewer is there experiencing the action first hand. Bay is an absolute master of this technique and isn’t afraid to get the camera as close to the action as it needs to be for the viewer to be hit by the full-force of the action. Bay, and French Cinematographer Jonathan Sela, take the opportunity to extend the director’s work from 2016’s 13 Hours, about the ambush on the American Embassy in Benghazi, and roll it into scenes featuring Josh Duhamel’s Colonel Lennox and his elite military team who play a significant role in the film’s second half. There are a number of complex battle sequences, and despite what people think of the Transformers movies; they highlight that Bay leaves nothing to chance when it comes to planning and covering the ‘Action’!

At its core, The Last Knight, like its predecessors, is all about the ‘Robots in disguise’. The work of ILM, and other visual effects companies, set this film apart from most in ‘Blockbuster’ category. The quantity of shots and the quality of their detail are astounding and that’s what fans of the Transformers movies look for as part of their overall enjoyment of this franchise. Throw in a character twist for Optimus Prime and the off-the-wall antics of Sir Anthony Hopkins as Academic Sir Edmund Burton, The Last Knight manages to keep the momentum of this long-running series rolling along. There may not be same ‘W-O-W’ as the first couple of films, but this fifth entry proves there’s still enough gas left in the Autobots’ collective tanks to keep them driving on down the ‘Box Office’ highway for some time to come!
