​What could possibly go wrong when three buddies (Tye Sheridan, Logan Miller, Joey Morgan) decide to join the Boy Scouts? When bloodthirsty, undead ghouls invade their once-peaceful town, it's up to kindhearted Ben, quick-witted Carter and class clown Augie to save the day. With help from Denise (Sarah Dumont), a beautiful but tough cocktail waitress, the boys must put their scouting skills to the ultimate test to save mankind and earn their zombie-killing badges.

​If you’re not easily offended, SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE is a lot of fun! The use of the term FUN does require some qualification in relation to the film’s content. SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE is not for everyone; it’s puerile to the extreme and its wanton violence shows a complete lack of sensitivity to humans, animals and zombies in equal measure. Therein lies the FUN. The film refuses to take itself seriously, so the viewer must also accept the outright absurdity on display is in no way serious and can relax into the story knowing it’s meant to be silly.

The story is pretty simple. Three friends, Ben (Tye Sheridan), Carter (Logan Miller) & Augie (Joey Morgan), are at the crossroads of maturing from boys into young men. For seven years they’ve been tied together by the common bond of Scouting, but Ben and Carter are conflicted. They’re association with Scouting (and Scout Leader Rogers played by David Koechner) has led to a serious lack of “coolness” and they’re the butt of jokes from just about everyone but themselves. Ben and Carter feel it’s time to move on, but are trying to spare Augie’s feelings. Ben and Carter decide that they’ll have one final camp-out with Augie to celebrate him achieving Scouting’s highest honour, but decide to sneak out to Carter’s older sister’s High School party. Augie confronts the pair just as they’re about to drive off and the friendship ends on downbeat note.

Now, nowhere is that outline above does there appear to be any FUN whatsoever. In amongst all of this though is a stream of gross-out humour that serve as plot points for what transpires for about an hour of the film’s 93 minute running time. The boys first encounter with the zombie outbreak is a deer they hit in the middle of the road. While trying to repair their car, Carter’s sister Kendall (Halston Sage) appear with her douche-bag boyfriend Jeff (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and their friend Chloe (Nikki Koss). After a brief exchange between the two groups, Ben notices that the deer they hit has mysteriously vanished. In a classic trope, Director Christopher Landon cuts away to the bushes and we can see Ben from the deer’s point-of-view. He then cuts to two ominous deer eyes looking out from the bushes.

Then, there’s Scout Leader Rogers. En route to the camping site to meet Ben, Carter and Augie, Rogers is attacked by the roadkill deer. Like a good outdoor adventurer, he manages to slay the attacking animal with his trusty pocket knife. At this point, actor David Koechner is playing the scene for what it’s worth, as he tries to extract a bit of melodrama out of having to kill a deer. What he doesn’t realise is “Peter Morris” (Theo Kypri), an infected research scientist seen in the film’s opening prologue has escaped into the wild and is standing right behind him. In a send-up of classic Zombie films like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, “Peter Morris” launches into Scout Leader Rogers and his his Zombie-way with him. The zombification of Rogers leads to some of the funniest scenes later in the film, with a set-piece in the Scout Leader’s Dolly Parton-decorated home where Augie and Rogers face-off against each other.

SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE is not a classic, but it has some very funny scenes and a really good chemistry between the three leads, as well as Sarah Dumont as Denise, who joins the boys part the way through the film, after Ben and Carter stumble into the local strip club and get more than they bargained for. The screenplay (credited to Landon, along with Carrie Evans and Emi Mochizuki) keeps the action moving along to the predictable “loser trumps cool” denouement, but that’s not really the point. The film has some very funny set-ups, some of which go far beyond good taste. (One scene however stands out above all others and it’s been awhile since I’ve heard an entire audience erupt in laughter at one shot. If you recall the “Franks & Beans” scene from SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, you’ll have an idea what’s in-store.) If you don’t mind over-the-top gore, Zombies, Zombie strippers, Scouting, Dolly Parton, Roadkill, fart gags, lots of pretty girls, lots of geeky boys and genitalia jokes, then SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE is the movie for you!
