​Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is excellent! That’s all people need to know. Those who see it (and there should be many), will not be disappointed. Perhaps, after more than a decade of serious, dark movies featuring Batman and Superman, the appearance of a lighter, brighter DC comic book icon was a matter of fate or - more simply - fait accompli, as far as Warner Bros, owner of the DC business, was concerned. Either way, Director Patty Jenkins has delivered a movie that, first & foremost, entertains. Unlike Man of Steel or Batman V Superman, Jenkins creates a movie that is cinematic without the slavish emphasis on creating a “Comic Book” within a feature film framework. Wonder Woman strikes a fine balance between the necessary plot elements required to deliver an action & adventure story whilst dedicating enough time to develop the main characters to the point where the audience actually cares what happens to them.

Wonder Woman is your standard Three Act affair. Allen Heinberg’s screenplay uses the First Act to deliver a truncated origin story for Gal Gadot’s Diana and her “Amazon” society comprised entirely of women, put upon Earth to bring virtue to Mankind and protect humanity if Aries, the God of War, should ever return to bring ruin once more! It seems a bit superfluous, but Heinberg is not without intent in delivering enough detail for the viewer to pay attention to and deliver the pay-off in the movie’s climax. The “Amazon” existence is shattered by the arrival of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, who inadvertently crashes his damaged, stolen World War I fighter plane through the fog-shrouded barrier of Thyemyscira; pursuing German soldiers not far behind. Arguably, the jury is out as to whether or not Chris Pine is a genuine movie star. He’s good looking, but he’s not classically handsome. He can act, but he always seem to be playing a variation of himself. He holds up the Star Trek franchise pretty well, but he’s yet to have a massive hit outside of that franchise. All of those things considered, the chemistry he strikes with Gadot in Wonder Woman is gold! Some actors just play well off each other and the Gadot-Pine pairing is one of thoses cases, where the timing of both the drama and the comedy works wonderfully well and provides many of the film’s best scenes.

Not only is Chris Pine great; so is Gal Gadot. Was she born to play Wonder Woman? Based on this film, the answer is a very definite yes. She’s physically imposing; she’s beautiful; she can act. She’s got the presence of the young Sigourney Weaver with the shimmering presence of a classic movie star. Even Lucy Davis’s Etta Candy, Steve Trevor’s endearing secretary, takes delight in skewering Gadot’s beauty at one point; making a sarcastic reference to the fact the Diana still looks beautiful even when she’s forced to wear a fairly decent sized pair of black-rimmed glasses! Like Davis, each of the supporting cast get their share of the film’s 141 minute screen time. David Thewlis, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Elena Anaya and Danny Huston all get their “moments” in front of the camera. The one disappointing addition to the story is the introduction of Steve Trevor’s undercover team halfway into the movie, comprising actors Eugene Brave Rock, Saïd Taghmaoui & Ewen Bremner. Their presence is understandable as  mere plot devices but not entirely necessary, as the prove to be something of a distraction from Diana just at the time as she takes up her mantle as “Wonder Woman”.

As might be anticipated, Wonder Woman has its fair share of CGI, but it’s nowhere near as jarring as recent “event” movies. The visual effects are there; they’re obvious, but - fortunately - they don’t overwhelm the story or the characters. Patty Jenkins and Chronicle (2012) Cinematographer Matthew Jensen keep the camera focussed at all times on Gadot’s Diana. This gives Wonder Woman a focal point around which all the other elements orbit. The introduction of Diana in 2016’s Batman V Superman was a highlight of that film and created a sense of anticipation about this new film. Behind-the-scenes tumult, with the departure of original director Michelle MacLaren over “creative differences”, and the indifferent appreciation of both Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad, placed even more pressure on Wonder Woman to be a critical and commercial success. The critical success is all but guaranteed. It’s a great film, with engaging characters and an above average story. Now it’s time for moviegoers around the world to decide whether they dismiss this as just another superhero movie or whether they believe we’re all in need of Wonder Woman!
