​The third explosive chapter of the blockbuster franchise that redefined the spy thriller finds extreme athlete turned government operative Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) coming out of self-imposed exile and on a collision course with deadly alpha warrior Xiang and his team in a race to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. S​xXx RETURN OF XANDER CAGE serves as both a sequel and reboot to the original 2002 film, starring Vin Diesel as the extreme athlete turned government agent who seemed capable of superhuman feats of strength, agility and pain endurance all in the name of American national security. The first xXx film earned $277 million globally, doing well enough that Revolution Studios decided to commission a sequel, even though Vin Diesel was unavailable to reprise his role as Xander Cage. No problem. The studio hired Ice Cube to play Darius Stone, a new xXx agent. The film tanked, earning a meagre $27 million in the United States and $71 million globally. With that sort of result, it’s no surprise it’s taken nearly twelve years to get the show back on the road. This time, Revolution Studios and distributor Paramount Pictures, have managed to bring Diesel back and surrounded him with a multi-national cast that will have appeal to a broad range of markets around the world.

Unlike many Action/Adventure/Comic Book type films these days, that seem burdened by the need to provide elaborate backstory for each and every character, the new xXx film wastes little time on such pleasantries. Besides Diesel, who is given a James Bond style opening sequence, performed primarily on a skateboard, the supporting characters are introduced by way of an action set-piece relevant to the film’s plot or a character title card that momentarily freezes the story as the most pertinent details are conveyed directly to the audience. The story ramps up the action from the very start, as Samuel L. Jackson’s Agent Augustus Eugene Gibbons is reintroduced to viewers by way of a recruitment meeting with Brazilian soccer star Neymar Jr. playing himself in a cameo that is designed purely to appeal to his legion of fans around the world. All does not end well for Gibbons, as he and his agent-to-be are incinerated by a satellite that has been remotely commandeered and turned into a weapon of mass destruction. Gibbons’ death, and a subsequent security breach at the CIA’s headquarters in New York, prompts Toni Collette’s Spy Boss Jane Marke to undertake an exhaustive search for the previously-believed-to-be deceased Xander Cage. ​​

​xXx Return of Xander Cage makes no apologies for being mainstream action fare, taking full advantage of its title character’s athletic prowess and stretching it beyond breaking point. The advantage that Diesel has as the lead character is that he’s NOT James Bond. One set-piece in the new xXx harkens back to Pierce Brosnan’s Die Another Day, where Bond escapes an iceberg tsunami by parasailing down the face of the enormous wave and up onto the ice field. Bond’s makers had well and truly jumped the shark as far as fans were concerned. Not so with Xander Cage. Diesel and martial arts expert turned action Donnie Yen, who plays Xiang, pursue each other through rugged jungle terrain but are suddenly confronted by a river that empties into the nearby surf beach. No problem. Just engage the motor bike’s surf ski function and spend the next couple of minutes chasing each other through the big waves! Somehow though, it doesn’t seem incredulous in the scheme of a Vin Diesel movie. For some reason, it’s much easier to forgive Diesel his indulgences than just about any other actor going around. It’s pretty clear that the only reason this new xXx movie got made was the presence of Diesel, who even receives a Producer’s credit in the film’s opening credits. The success of the rebooted Fast & Furious series, along with his participation in the Marvel universe, have given him enough clout to get this film, along with another in the Riddick series, into production even though there doesn’t appear to be obvious box office potential for either. xXx Return of Xander Cage sets its aspirations pretty low, but that doesn’t stop it from being entertaining. If you want to plant your arse on a soft seat for 107 minutes and chow down on an extra large bucket of popcorn, this is the movie you need to see.
