At two hours and forty-four minutes long, this is the longest Batman movie released to date, as well as the second longest movie that Christopher Nolan has directed. INTERSTELLAR (2014) is his longest at two hours and forty-nine minutes.

​Christopher Nolan is the first director to complete a full trilogy of Batman movies, but the second to direct a full trilogy of movies of one superhero (after Sam Raimi completed his Spider-Man movies).

​Cinematographer Wally Pfister expressed interest in shooting the entirety of this movie in the IMAX format, as Pfister and Christopher Nolan expressed distaste for shooting this movie in 3-D. Ultimately, this movie featured approximately one hour and twelve minutes of IMAX footage, while the rest was shot in a combination of 35mm and 70mm, as IMAX cameras proved to be too noisy for shooting the dialogue scenes.

​Christopher Nolan returns to complete the Gotham trilogy that launched with Batman Begins and reached the stratosphere with the billion dollar blockbuster The Dark Knight. Inception's Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt join the cast regulars along with Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) and Tom Hardy as the powerful villain Bane. Christian Bale prowls the night as the Caped Crusader, fighting crime and corruption with the help of Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is an ambitious extension of THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) that doesn't always successfully translate its story-telling ambition cinematically but is never short on the spectacle of a set-piece to mask its shortcomings.

Christopher Nolan's third Batman film takes place in the context of Gotham's final reckoning, as super-villain Bane (Tom Hardy) takes control of the city with a thermo-nuclear device that is primed to detonate. Batman (Christian Bale) is forced out of retirement to face the threat, but is still considered by many to be a wanted vigilante responsible for Harvey Dent's death at the end of the second film.

THE DARK KNIGHT is set eight years after the events of the second film. Gotham is no longer riddled by organised crime, as Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) has used the ‘Dent Act’ crime legislation to put away every would-be thug, robber, drug dealer and murderer in the city.

Gotham has never been safer, but it is has never been more vulnerable.

The crime-void that exists is an invitation for criminals from elsewhere to take advantage of the situation; especially with Batman out of the picture. Enter Bane; a hulking presence who possesses almost superhuman strength and the criminal intent to match.

In next-to-no-time, Bane brings Gotham to its knees by stranding the bulk of the city’s police force in the Gotham sewer system and deploying his own army of mercenaries to guard all the exits in and out of city in an effort to completely isolate it from the rest of the world. In an effort to save his beloved city, the Batman returns to confront Bane. Unable to match him physically, Batman is mercilessly pulverised, his back all but broken and his identity revealed to his adversaries.

Bruce Wayne awakens in another part of the world, in severe pain, trapped in an inescapable underground prison with only one way out. In an effort to completely break Bruce mentally, Bane delights in telling him that he’s not going to kill him; he’s going to make him watch as Gotham and its people are punished.

It’s no spoiler to disclose that the Batman manages to return to Gotham and lead an uprising against its mercenary oppressors. There’s twist and turns along the way and the story culminates in a showdown of epic proportions between the Gotham police department, led by Batman, and Bane’s army of thugs. If THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) owed its cinematic antecedents to crime dramas such as HEAT (1999) and THE GODFATHER: PART II (1974), then THE DARK KNIGHT RISES can be compared more akin to APOCALYPSE NOW (1979)  and FULL METAL JACKET (1987), as its characters are immersed in a narrative that sees full-scale war break out in the city.

One of the real treats of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is how Christopher Nolan is able to bring alive the most comprehensive version of Gotham city yet...

Up until THE DARK KNIGHT (2008), Gotham existed as an abstract caricature of the real New York City. THE DARK KNIGHT (2008), with its sweeping IMAX shots of Chicago, standing in for Gotham, gave the audience a much more realistic and defined version of Bruce Wayne’s fictional home city. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES takes full advantage of its Pittsburgh shooting locations to use even more exterior filming locations to create a sense that Gotham is real functioning city and compares in size to the great cities of the world. The increased amount of exterior filming also allows Nolan to inject scope into the film’s narrative, as elements such as crowd scenes are caught on camera as wide as possible to show the viewer that it’s not a few people, it’s not a few hundred people, its thousands! The film’s scope is by far the most ambitious of Nolan’s trilogy.
