MOVIE REVIEWS - 1998
1998 continued the push into mega-budget, "Event" movies...
ARMAGEDDOM, GODZILLA, LETHAL WEAPON 4 and LOST IN SPACE are all middle-of-the-road movies that were packed with acting talent, big visual effects and overblown marketing budgets. Once the creits rolled, it was hard to remember what any of them were about other than a blur of action. Fortunately, there were a number of more intimate films that cut-through with audiences. While a studio film, THE TRUMAN SHOW was very much focussed on performance, most notably from a considerably more restrained Jim Carrey with great support from Ed Harris. PI was Darren Aronovsky's first film and its subjent matter saw it gain credibility as one of the more intellectual films to ocme along in a while. The best genre film of the year arrived very early in the Alex Proyas Science Fiction Mystery DARK CITY. DARK CITY plays like a futursitic Noir film. It has great performances from a cast that inludes Rufus Sewell, Keifer Sutherland, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O,Brien and Colin Friels. Largely filmed in and around Sydney, co-written & directed by an Australia, DARK CITY surely ranks as Australia's greatest ever Science Fiction film... |
