​Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle. Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has had its fair share of choppy waters to navigate, but that hasn’t stopped the series becoming a multi-billion dollar movie franchise for Disney and series Producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. Much like Michael Bay’s Transformers series, the Pirates just keep on keepin’ on, almost in spite of the absence of anything that could be considered fresh or innovative. Even franchise star Johnny Depp’s domestic missteps out in the real world have failed to dim the lustre of this now five film series. With Dead Men Tell No Tales, “resequencing” seems to be the order of the day. “Resequencing” is an unusual term, but this latest tale, co-directed by the Norwegian movie-making duo of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, has taken the best parts of the previous four films, pared them down and then put them into an order that sees less reliance on Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and introduces a couple of new faces into the mix with Brenton Thwaites Henry and Maze Runner star Kayla Scodelario’s Carina.


Writer Jeff Nathanson sets up the film with an exhilarating prologue that sees young Henry stripped of his midshipman’s position after challenging his Captain, who has set his ship on a collision with Death! In this instance, “Death” is embodied in Javier Bardem’s Salazar, a Spanish Navy Captain whose connection to Jack Sparrow saw him and his crew imprisoned in the Devil’s Triangle many years before. Salazar spares Henry’s life after the young man promises to find Jack and deliver Salazar’s message that he is going to find Sparrow and “keeel” him! The next 110-odd minutes is spent in the usual manner of a Pirates film and Henry, Carina and Jack dodge and weave their way from one set-piece to another, encountering all sorts would-be heroes and villains, including a solid line-up of Australian actors such as David Wenham, Bruce Spence and series regular Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa. While not obvious, the eagle-eyed viewers will be able to make out some of the Australian landscape from the time the film spent shooting at the Village Roadshow studios on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

​While the film eventually wilts under the weight of its visual effects-heavy ending, it was a nice change to see the new Pirates film incorporate a large-scale practical effect into the mix early in the story, as Jack and his crew literally steal a bank. Not only does it add a sense of realism to the action, it provides multiple opportunities for sight gags that allow the audience to become reacquainted with Depp’s pratfall-laden, stumbling, bumbling routine as Sparrow. His performance is a bit old hat, but he gives fans of the franchise what they want in spades. Thwaites and Scodelario are no slouches in the action stakes and their resume of action movies up to Dead Men Tell No Tales has equipped them incredibly well for the rigours of this very physical movie. The only performance that doesn’t pass muster is Javier Bardem as Salazar. The black goo that oozes repulsively from his mouth for the majority of the film, makes his already heavy accent, that much more difficult to understand. (It should be noted that several audience members came out of the film’s preview screening commenting that a lot of the dialogue seemed to be drowned out by Geoff Zanelli’s big, nautical score and the cacophonous sound effects that grew increasingly louder with each set-piece exchange on the high seas!)

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is not short on entertainment. The action and adventure is everything fans have come to expect from the series. The key production personnel deserve credit for making some effort to change things up, albeit in a fashion that won’t rock the boat so much that this new film sinks at the box office. Although there’s been some discussion across the online community that Dead Men Tell No Tales may be the end of the series, it’s hard to imagine that happening with the introduction of new characters such as Henry and Carina; who help reinvigorate proceedings with their relative youth. Fans will also be pleased see some effort made to acknowledge the mythology that has developed around the series and there are story references that date all the way back to the original 2003 film. For those who love their post-credit “stinger” scenes, the one on the end of this film is actually worthwhile and helps round out an entertaining 129 minutes of swashbuckling adventure!
