FURIOUS 7 (2015) STORY SYNOPSIS

​After defeating international terrorist Owen Shaw, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and the rest of the crew have separated to return to more normal lives. However, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), Owen's older brother, is thirsty for revenge. A slick government agent offers to help Dom and company take care of Shaw in exchange for their help in rescuing a kidnapped computer hacker who has developed a powerful surveillance program.

Fast and furious is exactly what the audience get in the seventh instalment of this enduring and endearing action film series. While the stories have moved away from the hot car culture into more mainstream action adventure, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker have become the series mainstays and their on-screen chemistry is a large part of the new film’s success. Sadly, Walker’s death during filming has meant the series first-time director James Wan is forced to use all the tricks in the film-making book cover his star’s absence, especially in the movie’s second half. Despite the limitations created by the situation, Wan, Diesel and the entire cast & crew clearly banded together to come up with the most wildly entertaining Fast & Furious film to date.

Following on from the events of the last film, Diesel’s Dom Toretto and Walker’s Brian O’Conner have returned home to Los Angeles in an effort to return to some sort of normal life. Events escalate quickly as Jason Statham enters the scene playing Deckard Shaw, the big badder brother of Luke Evans’ character from the previous film. Statham gets one of the best bad-guy entries in recent cinema history and the audience get a sense that Dom and Brian are in for some serious pain if Shaw gets hold of them. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson returns as Hobbs and is thrown into the action early in the film, as he faces off against Shaw in a bone-crunching fist fight that sees Hobbs side-lined with multiple injuries.


The danger Dom and his team are in becomes clear when Shaw detonates a bomb in front of his home, nearly killing Dom, Brian, Jordana Brewster’s Mia and her & Brian’s young son. The crew learn Shaw has also orchestrated the murder of their friend Han who has been racing in Tokyo. At Han’s funeral, Dom realises that Shaw is stalking him and his crew and sets off in pursuit of him. The ensuing car chase and street fight sees the introduction of Kurt Russell as Mr. Nobody, a government undercover operative whom Hobbs has contacted to help his friends. At this point, the action really gets going. Action movie fans will not be disappointed by the effort the film's producers have made to make Fast & Furious 7 the most action-packed, adrenaline-charged film in the series to date. The challenges to completing the film created by Paul Walker's death have forced James Wan and Chris Morgan (the film's writer) to think outside of the formula and create more stand-alone sequences for each of the supporting characters. The result is an even greater sense of the ensemble "family" than any previous entries.

Fast & Furious 7 heads to several different parts of the globe, as Dom and his crew agree to retrieve some high-tech McGuffin for Russell’s character in exchange for his assistance in capturing Deckard Shaw. There’s jaw-dropping and eye-popping action as the film’s two big set pieces take action entertainment to the extreme. While it’s not high-brow cinema, it sure is a hell of a lot of fun for the audience. Wan and his film-making team take Chris Morgan’s script, writing his fifth movie in the series, to another level; delivering audacious stunts and non-stop action as the story ultimately returns to Los Angeles for the showdown between Shaw and Dom.

As far as performances go, everything is just as it should be. As he has done for the last several films, Vin Diesel anchors proceedings alongside Paul Walker. Michelle Rodriguez gets to play Letty differently in this outing, as her character is suffering from amnesia for the better part of the story. Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris provide the “Martin & Lewis” routine for the film, with their banter driving the humour during the film’s less action-filled moments. Jason Statham is suitably one-note as Deckard Shaw, but his raspy almost-Cockney accent makes him more relatable than many of the Eastern European villains popping up in recent action films. Dwayne Johnson hams it to the extreme and has some of the best thrown-down one-liners that coming from a less physically imposing specimen would just sound plain stupid. Johnson, however, is a unique talent and can get away with almost anything. Kurt Russell is a welcome addition to proceedings. He doesn’t take things too seriously and his character appears destined to pop-up in further Fast & Furious adventures.

Despite the film’s over-the-top action, its gigantic set pieces and general attempt to outdo its predecessor, Fast & Furious 7 wears its heart on its sleeve. Diesel and his “family” take the opportunity to farewell Walker in the context of the film and its final moments are tinged with sadness as the reality of his death hits home. The series will definitely miss Walker, but it opens the door for different stories to be told, and there’s little doubt that this film will be financially successful enough to warrant another adventure. For the moment though, take the opportunity to sit back and be entertained  as Fast & Furious 7 takes you from zero to action at record speed!
