​Genetically engineered from conception to be the perfect killing machine, he's the culmination of decades of research, endowed with unprecedented strength, speed, stamina and intelligence. Sometimes an action film comes along that exceeds viewer expectations and restores faith in the ability of cinema to deliver genuinely exciting, heart-pounding adventure that allows the suspension of disbelief for 100 odd minutes from the mundane of the everyday. HITMAN: AGENT 47 is not that movie. The film is a reboot of the almost off-the-radar 2007 film based on the extremely successful video game. Perhaps then, that is where the problem lies with this Rupert Friend headlined production that takes individual feats of extraordinary into the realm of utterly implausible with almost zero style or flair.

The 2015 version of HITMAN is, once again, written by Skip Woods, this time in collaboration with Michael Finch, who has given movie-goers the pleasure of such classics as PREDATORS, the Pierce Brosnan NOVEMBER MAN and the upcoming HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS 2; a sequel that not many people would have expected or wanted! The first feature film by Director Aleksander Bach will not go down as the worst movie in history, but it’s not going to trouble the Academy voters either, as he struggles to make the step-up from his short film background into cinematic long-form.

Like all bad films, the problems of HITMAN: AGENT 47 start with the story. It does, however, provide a unique juxtaposition that is worthy of mention… HITMAN is a very predictable film, but simultaneously makes absolutely no sense. That’s some feat. The story has to do with Hannah Ware’s character of Katia and the search for a man (Ciaran Hinds as Litvenko) who can help her unlock the mystery of her childhood. Katia is pursued by both Rupert Friend’s Agent 47, as well as Zachary Quinto’s John Smith; both of whom work for top-secret, shadowy organizations who operate in all corners of the globe from Salzburg, to Berlin and, ultimately, Singapore, where the second half of the film’s action plays out.

In place of a coherent story, the film lurches from one set-piece to another and, in its better moments, feels like a slightly less grounded version of a Matt Damon Bourne film. HITMAN: AGENT 47 does share the underlying Super Soldier premise of those films, but the choppy screenplay and Bach’s lack of control in the action sequences make it hard to watch. Bach and his Editor - Nicholas De Toth - choose to use too many master shots of the action, when an up-close-and-personal depiction of the fights between Friend and Quinto are not optional but absolutely required. It’s one of many examples where the choices about what the viewer sees in HITMAN is let down by second-rate film-making and it has all the hallmarks of a Director who is out of his depth. There is the occasional glimpse of what might have been, such as the wonderful little cameo by Jurgen Prochnow as a dodgy document counterfeiter, but for every scene like Prochnow’s, there’s a multitude of predictable scenes featuring the scheming Super Villain Le Clerq, played by Thomas Kretschmann or the Holier-than-thou US Embassy Agent Sanders, played by Dan Bakkedahl.


HITMAN: AGENT 47 should have absolutely been one of 2015’s guilty cinematic pleasures. A cast of talented actors. A crazy premise. Stunning locations. Sadly, not enough thought has gone into what has ended up on the screen and the viewer is left to ponder what might have been, as a derivative “seen it all before” film unfolds. Despite the end credit stinger, it’s a fair bet that the Box Office performance of HITMAN: AGENT 47 will put paid to any plans that Skip Woods or Aleksander Bach may have had for any future super assassin stories featuring Rupert Friend’s titular character.
