The God of Thunder is back and this time he’s brought his sense of humour! The Marvel Studio team have finally made Chris Hemsworth’s Thor accessible to movie audiences by making him almost (not quite entirely) unrelatable to the average person on the street. It doesn’t matter whether that street is in downtown New York or uptown Asgard, there’s nothing to compare a 6 foot 2 blonde-haired, blue-eyed God who twirls an unbreakable hammer that helps him control lightning and fly at the speed of sound! In plain terms, it’s completely preposterous. New Zealand Director Taika Waititi gets it and so, apparently, do Screenwriters Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. Where Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 Thor movie sought to deliver a degree of Shakespearean tongue-in-cheek to Asgard and its inhabitants, Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World was just far too serious for its own good. Fortunately, there’s been a reevaluation of the Thor franchise for the third outing and it’s by far the most enjoyable of the films by a considerable distance. Not only is it fun in its own right, Ragnarok injects some much-needed fun into the Marvel Studios creative endeavours. Up to this point, it had been left to James Gunn and his Guardians of the Galaxy to mess with Kevin Feige’s formula, but that franchise have been operating in isolation to the rest of the MCU. Thor: Ragnarok plays fast and loose with everything that’s happened over the last decade and ends up being just about the best damn adventure since Robert Downey Jr. launched proceedings back in 2008!

The film opens with Hemsworth’s Thor messing with The Fourth Wall as he brings the audience up to speed with what’s been going on since everyone last saw him. Basically, he’s been doing his hero thing, however, he hasn’t been so consumed that he hasn’t noticed something odd about his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins), Asgard’s King and Protector of the Nine Realms. (Those acquainted with the conclusion of Thor: The Dark World will know exactly what’s going on…) Waititi gives the audience a fair taste of what his plans are with Thor’s first encounter back on Asgard as he’s forced to endure some ham-acting of events, recreated lovingly for the Asgardian people, of events that took place in the previous film. Keep an eye out for some major star-power cameos as “Thor”, “Loki” and “Odin” pour on the melodrama in their stage performance. Deciding enough is enough, the real Thor brings an end to the farce unfolding before him and takes it upon himself to call his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to order so they can set about getting Odin back to work as ruler of his people. The two brothers wind up in some unusual places but manage to track Odin down only for him to tell them that the pair of them must take up the mantle as Asgard’s protectors. Cue Cate Blanchett’s Hela, the Goddess of Death…

Looking like some kind of S&M Goth, Blanchett cuts an impressive figure as the wannabe ruler of Asgard. Thor and Loki underestimate her in their first encounter and, in their effort to prevent Hela reaching Asgard, both end up being catapulted off the Bifrost and wind up on the planet Sakaar, where things get even weirder! By way of explanation for non-Fans, the Bifrost is an intergalactic transportation system… Having Thor and Loki end up on Sakaar allows the screenwriters to open the story right up and it’s during Ragnarok’s Second Act that older members of the audience will appreciate references the film makes to Science Fiction movies of the 1980s, especially Mike Hodges’ camped-up Flash Gordon starring Tom Jones and Max von Sydow. Most of the characters on Sakaar, including Jeff Goldblum’s wonderfully eccentric Grand Master, appear as though they’ve just stepped off a refugee shuttle from Mongo! In addition to Goldblum, audiences also get to see Mark Ruffalo (and his Hulk alter-ego) in action, as well as Tessa Thompson playing the Asgardian Valkyrie, who has knowledge of how to defeat Hela! Hemsworth and Ruffalo look like they’re having a great time together and Ragnarok’s energy, as it enters the Home Stretch, is so much better than anything audiences have seen from Marvel in a few years. Sure, everyone knows how this is going to play out, but this movie makes it fun. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it doesn’t have to. It’s a movie, based on a comic book, based on a Norse legend!
