JURASSIC WORLD (2015) STORY SYNOPSIS

​Located off the coast of Costa Rica, the Jurassic World luxury resort provides a habitat for an array of genetically engineered dinosaurs, including the vicious and intelligent Indominus rex. When the massive creature escapes, it sets off a chain reaction that causes the other dinos to run amok. Now, it's up to a former military man and animal expert (Chris Pratt) to use his special skills to save two young brothers and the rest of the tourists from an all-out, prehistoric assault.

Jurassic World isn’t really a film; it’s an event. As such, the need to get the dinosaurs into the action quickly is the primary thrust of the film’s plot. Director Colin Trevorrow does a solid job at picking up the Steven Spielberg mantle, but he’s nowhere near as skilled as the great Director at keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. Trevorrow has created a film that relies more on action and spectacle derived from set-pieces than the original 1993’s approach, which used much more suspense to create a tension where the humans were not in control. In this, Jurassic World is much more of a sequel to the second and third films in the Jurassic Park series; where the Action-formula was the preferred story approach.

The story opens with brothers Zach (Nick Simpson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins) being sent by their parents (Judy Greer & Andy Buckley) to the Jurassic World dinosaur park on Isla Nublar to meet up with their Aunt Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), the park’s Executive Director. As it turns out, Claire is just too busy to spend time with her nephews and palms them off to her Executive Assistant Zara (Katie McGrath). Instead, Claire spends time with corporate investors wooing them with sales pitches about the new dinosaurs being created to help increase the theme parks profits. This puts her into conflict with her boss Simon Masrani (Irrfan Khan), who makes Claire utilize the services of the Park’s Velociraptor keeper Owen (Chris Pratt) to make sure their latest attraction, the genetically-enhanced Indominus Rex, is secure in its holding yard. As expected, events take a turn for the worse during the check, when the I-Rex literally disappears off the Park’s tracking sensors and an act of stupidity by one of the Park security guards allows the monster to get out into the open.

Audiences don’t need a roadmap to know where this is headed. An enhanced version of a T-Rex loose on an island with 20,000 unsuspecting tourists is bound to create some mayhem and Trevorrow wastes no time in putting his main cast members through all sorts of dinosaur-induced torture. In the main, most of the actors hold up to the punishment. Chris Pratt backs up last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy performance with another entertaining turn as Owen, showing that he has the acting range to move between light and dark as the story requires without falling out of character. Bryce Dallas Howard is okay as Claire. She’s not in the same class as Pratt and her transformation from prissy executive into action heroine stretches credibility. (There’s a sense that the dynamic between her & Pratt is not everything that the film’s producers may have hoped for …) Nick Simpson and Ty Simpkins are good as the brothers whose cross-country exploits get them more than they bargained for, and Simpkins brings a good level of emotion to his role as the younger of the two whose mind is just as consumed by his parents impending divorce, as it is the next prehistoric threat before him.

The supporting cast are extremely mixed. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays security contractor Hoskins, gives a left-of-centre performance that degenerates as the film progresses. He has some good early scenes with Chris Pratt, but becomes more one-note once the I-Rex is unleashed upon the park. Irrfan Khan’s Masrani is not serviced especially well by the script. At first, he appears to be a more sophisticated version of the original film’s John Hammond, but some obvious plotting sets his character up for, quite literally, a big fall. Unfortunately, some of Khan’s dialogue is delivered in a clipped manner that makes it hard to follow with the Indian actor’s broad accent. Omar Sy, as Chris Pratt’s off-sider, is good with limited screen time and Jake Johnson, as Control Room geek Lowery, gets to deliver a lot of the film’s humour as his sarcasm takes on an Ian Malcolm-type “I told you so” tone as the danger escalates and lives are lost!

The technical aspect of Jurassic World is first-rate. The dinosaurs have never been more believable. The inter-action between Pratt and his four Velociraptors is critical in selling the film’s story and the visual effects ensure that viewer believes in the relationship. The addition of the I-Rex adds an increased level of excitement, but it is very similar to the T-Rex, so the threat level doesn’t feel as great as what it should have been given the scope of the film. (It does, however, have a very cool ability that I won’t spoil.) Overall, Jurassic World does what it needs to do without being a great film. It fells very similar to the Marvel films, where danger feels manufactured and the main characters will live to fight in the next instalment of the franchise. Where the Jurassic film franchise goes to next is anybody’s guess, but, without doubt, this entry will be successful enough to warrant further adventures. The central problem for the ongoing creative health of these movies will be overcoming the fundamental question: “What else can be done with a dinosaur?”
